BeOS

For those who don't know, BeOS was a very interesting project of Be Inc. It aimed at being a completely new and different operating system, initially for Be's own workstation (the PPC-based BeBox). BeOS was later ported to x86 due to the disastrous sales of the BeBox. It was a very quick, multimedia-based, unix-like operating system, with a consistent desktop environment. BeOS later turned up into a number of other systems, among which the most widely used seems to be Zeta. Unfortunately, Zeta does little to address the truly missing things in BeOS and focuses on less important things (GUI theming for example), and is less stable than Be's last release.
